Shoreline Protection: Stacked Stone & Seawalls
Seawalls are one of the most crucial aspects of waterfront property as they are your shoreline protection. Your seawall must withstand even the roughest conditions on the lake. Cracking, bowing, or erosion of the ground behind the wall can be signs of a failing seawall. Severe impacts from violent storms, high groundwater levels and marine borers are just a few hazards to consider when evaluating your wall! Rock Works can come out to your property to help you decide if you need seawall repair or seawall construction.
Guidelines for New or Replacement Seawalls:
- A minimum of 24" of vertical erosion must be evident before a seawall will be considered for bank stabilization.
- Rip Rap and Stack Stone Walls should be pursued in all cases where vertical erosion is less than 24".
- In cases where a seawall is permitted, the property owner will be required to place 5 horizontal feet of Rip Rap at the toe of the seawall.
- Seawalls can not be constructed to gain or reclaim usable property.
*Note: If the construction of your seawall requires excavation below the waterline, construction cannot occur from March 15 - June 15th due to higher water levels.
